- Origin: Asriel was born to farming parents in the Oserian Plains. His mother, who devoted a great deal of time to him when his father wasn't watching, did most of the house duties. Among many games they played with each other, Asriel most enjoyed to draw, or imagine he was in a far away land where anything was possible. He was a curious child, and would explore everything and anything he could find. His father, on the other hand, was a cruel and harsh man, who would force him to do hard work and labor throughout many of the long days and weeks they spent with each other. Both Asriel and his mother were under the constant threat of a beating by the hands of his father. His father was extremely religious, and if they did pray at the specific times he set out, or did not show enough religious vigor, they would be subject to horrific beatings by his hands. Though his father took a huge toll on Asriel's optimistic mindset, he still remained himself through and through, to his father's great displeasure. His father sought a normal son, who would do as they were told, and not ask questions- something Asriel did frequently.

If his father found out that Asriel, or his mother, had partook in anything creative, be it drawing or reading stories, his father would burn whatever they had been using, followed by more beatings. Around the age of twelve, Asriel would lose his mother to his father's rage. One night, after watching her son be screamed at by the horrible man,, his mother spoke out against Asriel's father's wrongdoings- never had she ever done such a thing before. Her husband became purple with rage, and proceeded to beat her, then to strangle her to death- a sight Asriel would never forget. From there on, Asriel never said a word to his father- only nods and head shakes. His father liked this new version of his son.

"Quiet and obedient as all sons should be" he would often think to himself.

Little did the father know, his son was spinning his own internal reality, knowing full well how terrible the real one was. In the times when his father left him alone, Asriel would imagine himself having an imaginary female twin, whom he named "Void". In addition, within his own mind, he would no longer refer to himself as Asriel, but instead Misfortune. Soon, to Asriel, Void was more than an imaginary companion, but something far, far more tangible- he began to believe that his twin was real. He even began to believe that he wasn't human, rather, an incarnation of pain and suffering. With his mental state crumbling, he confided in Void of his plan on how he would get revenge on his father; he planned to murder his father on his own sixteenth birthday. Void, however, feared that it would only land them in trouble, and that, even though a killer, his father was his father. Asriel ignored Void's worries, and told her that things would be better without the wretched man plaguing their lives. On the night of his birthday, Asriel crept up behind his father with a scythe in his hand and a sadistic smile upon his face. Eyes gleaming with madness, he slammed the scythe into the back of his father. Shouting in agony, his father collapsed to the floor, face up. Asriel approached him and brought the scythe high above his head. At this moment, Asriel's eyes met his father- his father's eyes were laced with fear and confusion. At once Asriel dropped the scythe, and stumbled back. His father lay on the ground in a pool of his own blood. At that moment, in panic, self-loathing and grief, Asriel ran from the house, never to return, his father left for dead in the shed where he had been working. After this point of no return, Asriel went out into the world, continuing to spin his imaginary world, and growing closer and closer to his ethereal, fake, twin.

The Following Is The Story He Spun For Himself. It is entirely untrue, and simply a creation of his own mind. The "vessel" he finds in the forest is simply a gray cloak, and a new perspective for him to take up. Since his father's murder, his mental state has steadily improved, but not completely, as he still sees himself as an imaginary entity with an imaginary twin.

Misfortune was an entity. Not of life, not of humans, not of beasts, nor the plants or Esna itself. Instead, Misfortune, and it's nameless twin, were born of things less material than what had came before them; they were created out of darkness, pure anguish, torment and grief (though neither sought to cause what they were born of. Rather, they sought to understand the world, and all within it. And, if possible, save them from their sufferings). After millennia of pain, and after many had died sad and aggrieved deaths, the shreds of awareness that they left behind (the pain they had felt locked within those shreds like insects in amber), had formed into two distinct minds; Misfortune, and it's twin, Void.

Though they were made from anguish, earlier on in their development they had been subject to a great deal of compassion, love and happiness (though it was not directed at them, they still managed to, eventually, understand what they were seeing; the shreds of awareness they had been born from allowed them to gain a great deal of humanity). Soon, they had found they had a purpose for their existence- to erase all pain and suffering from the whole of creation. Realizing their goals, they found that they needed a vessel in order to achieve them, as they would not be able to in the states they were in (completely invisible and formless; just two floating awarenesses). Though they needed a body, they refused to kill in order to get one. Instead, they searched for an already deceased vessel. Whilst wandering an empty dark pine forest, they came across a departed human, laying face up in the pine needles. They wore a gray cloak, with buttons down the front. They appeared to be around the age of 18, though they weren't adept at telling a male human from a female one. Their throat was slit, and appeared to be fresh. The loneliness, terror and anguish emanated off them in waves (the twins can sense emotion, as that is what they were formed from).

An idea occurred to the both of them; what if by possessing this vessel, they could bring them back from the dead? So, with that thought in mind, they entered into the body. Once inside, they attempted to restart the heart of the newly dead human. Slowly, but surely, the heart began to pump. As the blood began to flow, they could feel a severe pricking throughout their entire body. For the first time ever, they began to FEEL- but not with emotion, but instead with physical, nerve impulses. They found it absolutely invigorating. They also came face to face with another new phenomena- PAIN. They realized, that the sensation searing through their neck was something they had heard of before. Instead of this realization causing them fear or dismay, they greeted it with curiosity and wonder. Another new realization came into the forefront- their neck, however mangled, was healing (though they new from experience that certain things in the throat couldn't heal). It seemed as though the entrance into the body had restarted it, and made it start producing cells that hadn't been made since childhood or infancy. As soon as they were healed, their heart pumping, nervous system working, they took in their first, prolonged, breath. The feeling of air rushing through them was another novelty that astounded them. The next novelties were when they; opened their eyes, seeing the world in color for the first time, smelled the aromas that surrounded them, and felt the dirt that they lay upon. After all this had passed, they realized that they knew how to stand, which they had previously never done (being born non-physical).

Standing patiently, they waited to be greeted by the previous possessor of the body. Nothing happened. Concerned, they searched throughout their mind, looking for a third awareness. With a pang of sadness, they realized that, upon entry, they had pushed out the body's previous memories, and replaced them with their own. With having taken on a physical form, they set out to eradicate all pain from the world. Though they would find that this goal, while easy to have, was not easy to enact.

Section 4/4 - Open-ended questions
Please answer at least three of the questions to show how your character would interact with the world. Delete the spares (if applicable). Please include at least one paragraph for each question you answer.

Question 1

You stumble outside into the open air after some heavy drinking in an Oserian tavern. Just before you're about to pass an alleyway, a hooded man rushes out of it and runs for it - seemingly, he has both a blade and some jewellery on him. You take a quick peek in the alleyway to see a feminine figure collapsed on the ground, holding her hands over a bleeding wound in her torso. The thief is about to escape and the woman seems in critical condition. You...

- Misfortune rushes towards the figure. He calls out for help but no one comes. Quickly, he tears off his cloak and wraps it around her torso, attempting to staunch the bleeding. He gently picks her up, and brings her to the closest and safest place to assess and fix her wounds- if they're fixable at all.

Question 2

You are on your way to the Korsian city of Telth to sell some wares. Upon reaching the front gates you are stopped by the guard. They deny you entry for the time being as the traffic into the city is too high. You are effectively forced to wait in the refugee camp located between the two gates for the time being. The camp is
filled with shopping stalls and refugees sleeping on the floor. How do you spend your time in the camp?

- Misfortune explores the stalls and the surrounding area. He then asks about to see if any of the refugees require any help. Realizing they do not, he decides that he will sleep for the time being, until the guards let him into the city.

Question 3

You've gotten lost and wandered awhile into Drahl lands, eventually finding yourself in Crookmire Swamp, where you decide to settle for the night. Finding a meal to buy for the evening takes some effort, but you do come across an old crone in ragged clothing, who offers to sell you some sea-looking food. She doesn't ask much, but warns you that eating it is 'unpleasant' to outsiders. You...

- Misfortune decides not to take the meal, and to go hungry for the night. He finds a place of shelter and rest, and heads off to bed.

Question 4

In the midst of battle, you find yourself approaching a wounded enemy soldier. The soldier is on the floor, clearly in terror as they cradle one of the dead. Enemy forces begin to advance in the distance and you know you have to act fast. The soldier then grasps at a cloth and removes it from the dead soldiers pocket. They continue to cry, and starts calling the dead soldier's name in despair. Then the soldier glances up to see you - with your weapon up - but does not care of your approach, continuing to cradle the dead soldier. You…

- Misfortune, seeing the pain and sadness the solider is obviously feeling, decides to show him/her mercy. He turns a blind eye to them, and raises his sword to the greater threat.

Question 5

You have wandered across a seemingly endless tundra for what have felt like days. A raging snowstorm makes you unable to see more than a few metres ahead. Being almost out of resources, you are delighted to find out that you have stumbled your way to a village. Upon closer inspection you find out it's a Northern village, and the residents are not very friendly towards strangers. What do you do in this dire situation?

- Misfortune, exhausted from the long journey, realizes it's either "try my chances in the village" or die. Timidly, Misfortune enters the village, unsure of what reception awaits.

You’re almost there! Your application is pending.

There are only a few things to change for a final decision.

Make the following edits to your application:

1. There aren't ghosts in the setting, specifically, if you are talking about physical spirits that are capable of possession. Read our lore for more information on what could fit into the server.

2. Your name, misfortune, and your age, using physical and spirit forms, are both based on the ghostly nature of your character, as is your skin. You could theoretically keep some of these aspects, but I would detach them from the ghost backstory.

3. You have not set a culture, I imagine this is due to the ghost background, but I request that you read our lore to familiarize yourself with the server.

4. Your backstory mentions things such as spiritual beings and corpse reanimation, as well as magic healing and being from two different spirits. If you can adjust the character concept to have a split personality or maybe a traumatized girl living her siblings life, it may work better into the lore of the server. Feel free to adjust as you need however!

5. Your questions are lacking in details. Please answer as though you were going to be rping with other fellow roleplayers and try to paint me a picture with your words as best you can.

Once that is done, make a comment affirming you have made these changes and your application will be reviewed again as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Congratulations! Your application has been approved.

You will now be whitelisted on the server.

You should put in an intrigue application for the psychotic aspects of your character, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to kill people, but that your mental state is more volatile.

Make sure to take some last peeks at relevant information and guides.

You can use ToB’s Discord for communication and questions! You will find me and other whitelisters there too, ready to teach you the ropes.
