How did you hear about Tale of Banners?

Do you have any previous roleplay experience?
(Please give examples, no experience is acceptable)

What do you define as roleplaying?

Describe the term ‘powergaming’ in your own words:

- Metagaming is the usage of in-character knowledge out of character to have an effect in-game. For example, telling your peers to meet at a specific location without a in-game messenger or telling them in person beforehand. Even if you know that in character detail OOC and your character does not; you cannot enact upon it.

- “Mary-Sue” Is the nickname given to a character who seems to have no flaws, bland and predictable actions or is unrealistic to the lore.

What does the abbreviation ‘OOC’ mean & when should this be used?

Leon displayed in his casual attire: he’d be wearing leather boots as well as a cozy red coat, a blue and gold striped shirt featuring a white sash where he would sheathe his blade.

- Leon Beowulf

- 22

- Oserian

Story & Biography:

  • Humble Beginnings.
  • The year is 985 A.T. in the Dutchy of Avendale, it was a calm and hazy night when Elise Beowulf would give birth to Leon Beowulf. The Beowulf family was established in 820 A.T, it was well saturated with impressive martial artists and swordsmen; many of whom were soldiers and officers in the ranks of the Oserian military force. The family would be well educated, inspired by the first military member of the family; Osferd Beowulf in 920 A.T. The family’s main trade was blacksmithing from the start, which was introduced to the family at around 900 A.T. Leon’s father, Abram Beowulf was also a blacksmith and former soldier. Growing up, Abram had taught Leon his trade as an apprentice. He would also use this time of his life to hone his son’s combat and swordsmanship skills. Reaching only the age of 13, Leon had become quite the impressive combatant for his age. This was due to the rigorous training that is a custom to the Beowulf family, it was thought that as soon as the age of 7 the child will be able to learn the martial art and swordsmanship skills of the family.

  • The Motivation.
  • Leon has reached the age of 17, his martial arts skills would outstand other members of his family; Leon has lost his motivation for blacksmithing, taking a full interest in the world of combat and the tactical game that lies behind the curtains of war. He would spend the next three years studying military strategy; completely abandoning blacksmithing as he’d be engulfed by the books in his family library. He would do nothing but study and train for those 3 years. It would come to show on Leon’s 20th birthday. He had only one birthday wish for this year, which he had begged for 3 years prior. That was for his father to allow him to participate in the Oserian Battle Games. The event Leon would partake in is a full contact unarmed fight. Leon and his opposing contestant were patted down to ensure they had no weapons on them, other than that the only rule was the fighter who remains conscious is the victor. Leon would stand at 6’0, his opponent standing at 6’2. Leon knew that his opponent had more reach than he did, so it would be foolish to try and kick or punch the male first; instead he let his opponent make the first move. His opponent would gain his distance with his stance ready, aiming to throw his first jab. Leon would dodge the jab, hoping to end the fight as quick as possible he’d send a false punch hoping his opponent would try to catch his clumsy blow. He had assumed correctly, as his opponent would have moved to attempt and grab the hand; Leon would successfully front kick the opponent in his right thigh to back him off. His opponent, in a fury steps foward to begin a brute barrage of strikes that Leon would have to endure until the next round, as the first round would begin to come to a close. The second round of the match has begun at the strike of a bell, Leon's opponent would step forward attempting to jest Leon by pounding on his chest and releasing a yell. The opponent would throw a clumsy aimed punch, his stamina drained from the barrage of strikes. Leon would elbow strike his opponent across his face and knocking out one of his teeth. Leon knew he would have to act quickly if he wished to survive and preserve his remaining stamina. Leon takes his opponent’s stun to his advantage; he’d tackle the male down, first establishing his guard around his opponent to keep him from escaping. His opponent could do nothing but jab at Leon’s arm and back, only landing a few of those as his blows would grow weaker due to the lack of range from his position. Leon would successfully establish a choke-hold by grasping around the male’s neck with one arm and securing that arm with his other, then squeezing; he’d keep his guard maintained by having his left knee on his opponents thigh with applied force, his other leg locked behind the male’s back to restrict the range of motion. The opposing fighter’s eyes would roll back and shut as his body would become flimsy. Leon has won the contest without even striking blood from his opponent; All resolved within the first minute of the second round of the match.

  • The Next year.
  • It is Leon’s 21st birthday, and he has chosen to spend it in the alehouse. Leon would have drunk the amount of alcohol several alcoholics could consume; next thing he knew, he was in an alley where a masked man would approach him from behind and knock him on the head with a wooden club. Leon would wake up groggily in a pile of horse manure, clumsily staggering his way back to his family's estate. His family would shame him for being so reckless, even if it was his birthday and cast him out of the household permanently. Come the next year upon Leon's 22nd birthday, the day his banishment of his family's household would come to an end; He would only return to discover he was the final remaining member of the Beowulf family. The estate had been consumed by some greedy family from the residence over. There had been an apparent dispute between the two families over land claims for many years; It was discovered that the Beowulfs had been evading a certain tax on steel which had not been a commodity at the time. All persons who retain an income an lived in the Beowulf household were imprisoned after their trial, and sentenced to fifty years of imprisonment, each. The Beowulfs who were imprisoned would die from a horrible disease. The Beowulfs now became nothing less of a whisper upon those who knew the family. Leon Beowulf is now left with nothing but his clothing and a decision to make: and that is for what is next to come.
Section 4/4 - Open-ended questions
Please answer at least three of the questions to show how your character would interact with the world. Delete the spares (if applicable). Please include at least one paragraph for each question you answer.

  • Question 1

You stumble outside into the open air after some heavy drinking in an Oserian tavern. Just before you're about to pass an alleyway, a hooded man rushes out of it and runs for it - seemingly, he has both a blade and some jewellery on him. You take a quick peek in the alleyway to see a feminine figure collapsed on the ground, holding her hands over a bleeding wound in her torso. The thief is about to escape, and the woman seems in critical condition. You...

    - Leon would stagger toward what he would perceive to be a collapsed woman, attempting to think clearly; he’d tear some of the cloth from his sleeve and use his belt to make a turnikit, clumsily fastening it to slow the bleeding. Blood would turn the cloth crimson, Leon would look about to see if there were any sober by-passers. A merchant would be unloading fresh goods from his carriage into his shop across the alley and Leon would take notice. Leon would then leave the woman to seek the merchant for help in the situation as he would be unable to help her any further given the fact he is heavily intoxicated. The Merchant would call forth a Guard from his post a couple of blocks down. The Guard would come into the alley, clearing the area of people who may be watching; The guard would then handle the situation further, as Leon is told by the guard to return to his residency.

    Question 2

You are on your way to the Korsian city of Telth to sell some wares. Upon reaching the front gates you are stopped by the guard. They deny you entry for the time being as the traffic into the city is too high. You are effectively forced to wait in the refugee camp located between the two gates for the time being. The camp is
filled with shopping stalls and refugees sleeping on the floor. How do you spend your time in the camp?

    - Leon would attempt to see if there is anybody he is able to sell his goods in the refugee camp. If there happens to be somebody who is willing to purchase Leon's wares in the camp he would do so, proceeding into the city when his turn comes to sell the rest of his goods. If nobody there is able to buy what Leon is looking to sell, he will bide his time and wait for his turn into the city; Perhaps engaging with others who may be waiting or reading a book to keep himself interested. Once Leon's time comes to enter the city of Telth, Leon would approach the merchant district and sell his wares.

    Question 3

In the midst of battle, you find yourself approaching a wounded enemy soldier. The soldier is on the floor, clearly in terror as they cradle one of the dead. Enemy forces begin to advance in the distance and you know you have to act fast. The soldier then grasps at a cloth and removes it from the dead soldiers pocket. They continue to cry, and starts calling the dead soldier's name in despair. Then the soldier glances up to see you - with your weapon up - but does not care of your approach, continuing to cradle the dead soldier. You…

    - Leon would take a moment to assess his situation, noting that his enemy is beginning to make their advance; Leon quickly paces a step foward, reading his stance and blade. He’d look to the soldier who is crying with the corpse in his arms, his sword raised and ready to smite the enemy. He’d look the male dead into his eyes and say “You should have killed me first, and mourned later. . .” Leon would then bring down the blade in a decisive strike, decapitating the soldier who had given up his urge to continue battling; Then returning to the formation in preparation for the oncoming enemy. He'd furrow his brow, a devilish grin on his blood splattered face; shield and blade ready as the enemy battle cry begins to roar closer and closer. The true battle now begins. . .

Congratulations! Your application has been approved.

You will now be whitelisted on the server.

Your definition of powergaming is a little vague but you seem to have a good, experienced grasp of roleplay. I can trust that you will not powergame in roleplay combat.

Even though you have chosen to use the second name 'Beowulf' I put it down to a tastefully included reference. Remember we try to discourage over use of direct references so please keep that in mind ;3

Overall a high quality application well done ^^

Make sure to take some last peeks at relevant information and guides.

You can use ToB’s Discord for communication and questions! You will find me and other whitelisters there too, ready to teach you the ropes.

Join our server on the 9th of May at 9PM BST for the official release!
