Karibah - Korsian Spices From the Sea
A Culinary Guide, written by Mahmut Osman from Gorbus

Korsia is known for its many spices. Harvested and gathered from all of the Korsian Peninsula, one place they harvest their culinary produce is surprisingly from the ocean. Warm waters around the Korsian coasts bring flavorful plants growing on Coral. Those plants, or “Karibah” as the Korsians call it, are often harvested with special tools. Some Korsian Merchants have managed to make a working cultivation projects, but these are rarely found and often not heard of, as it is the secret of wealthy Korsian Merchants.

Most Karibah species are often cut freshly and blended with salt to use or put into food. They can also be dried to blend with dry smoke, to create a unique taste and experience, and in some cases it has a medicinal use. The following kinds of Karibah are known to be used around the world:

Fire Karibah:
Fire Karibah is known as the spiciest of them all. Often dominant in most warm ocean climates, it is also the most harvested one. Mixed with salt crystals, it can be used as a replacement for regular black peppercorns, and Korsian Hostel visitors are known to mix this with dry smoke to play a game of “Sun Eater”. He who can smoke the most (often painfully) Dry smoke mix, wins.

Nomad's Karibah:
Nomad's Karibah is lesser known to outsiders, but these blue tubes have a special purpose in Nomad practices. The insides of the tubes (where the spice Is hidden) is often dried and used as a blue dye color, and as a medicine. Mixed with other ingredients, and distilled well, it can recover many ailments, varying from a headache to blood corruption, or even insanity, as some nomads say…In culinary cases, it is used as a bitter spice to enhance flavor in soups, stews and it even has a use as a meat preserver.

Horny Karibah:
Horny Karibah is mostly known to be a very sweet, almost sugar-like spice. It is often dried and used as a sweetener in Candy, Warm Milk, Cake, and much more. Rumors go around that Korsian Princes and their Concubines snort dried Horny Karibah as a substance to increase their libido.

Sleeping Karibah:
This kind of Karibah, known as ‘Kush Kariba’ to the Drahl, can be used as a sleeping medicine, but can also be used as a calming agent, and it can even be blended with Dry Smoke to create an interesting flavored tobacco which can cause a very tranquilizing ‘High’. In culinary cases it’s not used often, but the Drahl are known to spice up their kova with it, due to its unique sweet flavor, as they also use it in other Drahl dishes.

Lovers Karibah:
Korsians call it ‘Habeb’, meaning ‘lover’, because ground Habeb is often gifted by men to woman to confess their love to her. It’s a quite rare species of Karibah to be found and often sold for the highest price at auctions. In the Korsian Kitchens, Lovers Karibah is used to make tea, which is often drunk by rich merchant’s wives and spoiled concubines.

How to Harvest and Cultivate Karibah
They say only true coastal inhabitants of Korsia know how to perfectly harvest it. Since the already fragile plants grow on even more fragile coral, it is mandatory to have patient lungs and a even more patient hand for the tool. As speaking for the tool, not just any high quality tool would suffice. Some say they are embalmed with an acid, others say a diamond is used to sharpen the tool's blade. But the truth behind a Karibah Knife's "silken touch" remains a secret.

To cultivate it is even more impossible. As the chef cook of Gorbus' Emir, i was allowed one visit to a cultivation site. Such replication of the plant's living space is an expensive joke. A whole construction of glass, Oserian woodwork and even a whole watering system based on Drahl technology. I start to envy those poor bastards, telling everything in the name of their Tsarra. In any case, such cultivation sites can only exist within the warm coasts of mighty Korsia!
