Tarique Duplantier

Korsian / Oserian (read bio)

Story & Biography:
*note, using some semi-french culture references in my characters name and speaking, hopefully it's okay*

Tarique was born as the son of a Oserian father and a Korsian mother. His father, Gaston, was a merchant ship captain, traveling the world, buying and selling, avoiding pirates and hostile seafarers and trying to establish a trading empire, his greatest wish. Tarique's mother, Aleena, used to be a rich merchants daughter. Nowdays she tends the housekeeping on the ship and taking care of her only son, Tarique. Life happened mostly on the merchant ship and varied from time to time. In the better days Tariques father made good deals, there was plenty of good food and in those times Gaston arranged education for young Tarique, hiring traveling professors and teachers to educate him in what his father saw useful, mostly related to Gaston's own profession. Aleena also thought her son on the ship many things, especially how to take care of himself.

Despite traveling a lot, Tarique never came on land. His father forbade him to go on land without his permission. Tarique only came on land when his father had to attend business meetings or feasts with his trade partners. Because of this, Tarique didn't had any friends except for his family and his father's crew. His best friend on the ship was a foreign sellsword called Murak, who guarded his family for almost as long as Tarique's father had his ship.

When Tarique entered his teens, his father decided to educate him in his own trade, hoping that his son would succeed him. Tarique spent most of his teenage days with his father, managing the ship and it's crew, eating and sleeping inside inns, lot's and lot's of market visits, holding conversations and keeping relations with his father's customers and spending a lot of time on the main land. More than before. In his free time Tarique went back to the ship, visiting his mother and learning how to use a sword from Murak. Tarique didn't like fighting, but as Murak said, it's better to know the basics, just to defend yourself. Despite the fact he spent a lot of time with his father, Tarique didn't like his father. All those constant rules and obidience to him and no sense of fun or humor. It often ended up in heavy aruging between Tarique and his father. His mother also argued with Gaston a lot about the education of their son. Long story shortened; Tarique was more a mother's child than a father's.

Eventually Tarique realised he had to become a man. After learning every trick from his best friend, Murak, he know the basics of swordfighting and could call himself an average swordsman. His father gave him more responsibility each time he saw more potential in his son. His father was close to establish a small trading empire in a city, ending a long era of traveling by sea.

Sadly, that didn't happen...

In a short time, a series of unfortunate things happened. A criminal gang plundered and destroyed Father's biggest safehouse, losing almost all tradeable goods.
Many of his father's trading partners ended up closing their business due to unknown reasons. Much disfortune happened and Tarique's father lost everthing but the ship. Tensions at the family's ship were rising every day. Tarique's mother and father were often in heavy arguing. Aleena offered a solution to move to her brother, starting a new life in Telth. Gaston, swallowed by his pride, kept trying keeping his trade alive, losing more in the process. Tarique saw his family breaking.

Eventually the family broke apart, after long months of arguing, fighting and seeing Gaston getting more lost in his business problems and later on alcohol, Aleena decided to take everything and to leave the family. Tarique and her mother have been talking a lot the last few weeks before leaving and decided to go together to Telth. The morning they were about to leave, Gaston made many attempts to keep his family together and refused to let them go. After hours he gave up, not a single moment later he became drunk with rage and yelled to Tarique and his mother leaving.

Arrived in Telth, Tarique spent only a few years together with his mother before she passed away at old age.
Today, Tarique is almost in his thirthies and has decided to travel the world, like his father, as a merchant. Leaving his home behind.

Tarique's wish now is to settle in a city and open up a shop, creating a bond of friends and hopefully having a family again.

Open-ended questions

Question 1
You stumble outside into the open air after some heavy drinking in an Oserian tavern. Just before you're about to pass an alleyway, a hooded man rushes out of it and runs for it - seemingly, he has both a blade and some jewellery on him. You take a quick peek in the alleyway to see a feminine figure collapsed on the ground, holding her hands over a bleeding wound in her torso. The thief is about to escape and the woman seems in critical condition. You...

Answer: Despite being drunk, Tarique rushes to the aid of the wounded lass. With the education he had, he knows that the wound should be closed thight. Tarique would use any peace of clothing or safe material to keep the wound shut, while yelling for a doctor. Bandaging the wound would go sloppy...

Question 2
You are on your way to the Korsian city of Telth to sell some wares. Upon reaching the front gates you are stopped by the guard. They deny you entry for the time being as the traffic into the city is too high. You are effectively forced to wait in the refugee camp located between the two gates for the time being. The camp is
filled with shopping stalls and refugees sleeping on the floor. How do you spend your time in the camp?

Answer: Being a tradesman, Tarique would still try to spend his time well, seeking good deals in both buying and selling. Also, while waiting, getting some snack and beverage at a local shopping stall, he seeks conversation with people he would find interesting.

Question 3
You've gotten lost and wandered awhile into Drahl lands, eventually finding yourself in Crookmire Swamp, where you decide to settle for the night. Finding a meal to buy for the evening takes some effort, but you do come across an old crone in ragged clothing, who offers to sell you some sea-looking food. She doesn't ask much, but warns you that eating it is 'unpleasant' to outsiders. You...

Answer: Being a smart person, Tarique would ask the old crone more about the food and it's consequences by eating it. Tarique's decision is based on the information, but doesn't like to take big risks with is life. If the food's just nasty to outsiders, Tarique would eat it. If it may cause some effects like nausea, Tarique would look a bit futher for food...

Question 5
You have wandered across a seemingly endless tundra for what have felt like days. A raging snowstorm makes you unable to see more than a few metres ahead. Being almost out of resources, you are delighted to find out that you have stumbled your way to a village. Upon closer inspection you find out it's a Northern village, and the residents are not very friendly towards strangers. What do you do in this dire situation?

Answer: Tarique would take the risk entering the village and try to establish contact with the locals. He is educated and knows at least a little bit about nothern customs. With the few resources and money left, Tarique would decide to take rest in the village's Inn and try to trade a little bit untill the storm goes away.
